Welcome

Welcome

Welcome to McPherson Optometry. We are a family run business, founded in 1960 by Charles McPherson. Sons Stephen and Malcolm McPherson now run the practice. In 2003 their sister, Fiona Florence joined the practice initially looking after the accounts and later adding office administration.

Following extensive refurbishment, the practice now boasts the latest technology to maintain and improve eye health. Including high-tech equipment, collectively dealing with ultra-thin lightweight spectacles through to complex contact lenses and treatments for eye problems.

We believe that an independent practice has a responsibility for each and every one of the patients we see and that we treat everyone as we would like to be treated ourselves; this comes from the practice beginnings. We are proud to be a family business with our history going back over 50 years and two generations of opticians.

Our Technology

Since 1996, McPherson Optometry has used digital technology to photograph the back of the eye to enable a more comprehensive examination and detection of abnormal eye conditions. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) takes this examination a step further by taking a CT scan of the retina. This technique gives a series of cross section images of the retina and is particularly useful to diagnose Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

A Brief History

1958

Charlie and Vera get married

A happy day for all concerned!  The practice and the children were just a glint in young Charlie's eye...

1960

C I McPherson Optician

Charles McPherson started in practice in 1960, in a small consulting room within Simpsons Pharmacy at the present site in King Street. At first the entrance was through the pharmacy premises, but in due course Charles bought a section of the building and created his own entrance through the tenement corridor of 21 King Street.

1986

...and Sons

The next major phase was in 1986 when Charles was joined by the current partners, his sons Stephen (1985) and Malcolm (1986) after they both qualified with Honours degrees from the University of Aston in Birmingham.

1987

23 King Street

The Practice evolves to encompass the whole of the ground floor. A spacious new reception and dedicated dispensing area are added along with a  pre-screening room.

2011

Clinical Suite

In November 2011 we added a purpose built clinical suite on the first floor, installed a lift and refurbished the whole of the Practice.  This was officially opened by Michael Matheson, Minister for Public Health.
